Saturday 17th June 2017

On Saturday 17th June 2017, the community came together to enjoy the City of Rochester Symphony Orchestra (CRSO) perform in the Tithe Barn. As part of Lenham’s Family Festival, a group of volunteers organised the event with the proceeds being given to charity.
A larger orchestra returned to perform Alice Suite by Jacob Bride. Music and Dance based on Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ with the children of Lenham Primary School dancing in the aisles. Soloists Pam Palmer and Sian Woodling’s performance was enchanting and the second half with Gary Bowman and Brian Rance performing Mozart and Haydn ending with the joyous last movement of Beethoven 7.

Pupils of Lenham Primary School produced beautiful artwork displayed around the barn for the audience to enjoy whilst sipping on Prosecco and nibbles.

We’re pleased to hear such positive feedback since the event. Sarah Howell, Headteacher of Lenham Primary School sent us a touching email, which, she has kindly allowed us to show:

Dear all,

Thank you once again for making Saturday night’s performance really special for the pupils, friends and family of our school. It truly was an honour to be a very small part of such a successful and enjoyable evening.

We would love the opportunity to do something like this again, and have already been thinking about how we might be able to invite ourselves along to the afternoon rehearsals next year, with some children who would otherwise never hear a live orchestra!

I’m also hoping you won’t mind me keeping in touch until at least next spring, when we complete our whole school theatre work on Alice in Wonderland.

Finally, I thought I’d share with you a comment passed onto me by one of the dancers’ parents this morning. On Sunday, they had been reflecting upon Saturday evening and the child commented that she might want to learn to play the bass, as she loved the ‘big, deep notes it plays’. She was definitely inspired by the music, the talent and because they were sat so nice and close to the orchestra, they were able to truly feel the ‘live’ quality of it all.

Thank you all so much for this experience, and I very much look forward to working with you again,

Kind regards,
Sarah Howell
Lenham Primary School

The proceeds from this event, raised by tickets sales and the bar were given to The Katie Piper Foundation *£625, Lenham Primary School *£625 and CRSO £625. We are pleased this will help those affected by severe burns and provide new hope by the wonderful work undertaken by The Katie Piper Foundation. Lenham Primary School will develop their outdoor learning and the proceeds given to CRSO, largely recovered costs in rehearsing and producing the event.

Monies* were given to the Lenham Family Festival Main Committee to add to their total, to produce a fantastic sum of £1,385 given to each of the festivals chosen charities.
